They are the ones that had explained to Amber about tame bees vs wild bees and how the bees in the hive were genetically enhanced to not sting. He initially has a hard time with the move but Lucas helps him form a plan and fit in better. He is about 5 years younger then Amber and just entering Teen Level 50 at the time Amber is leaving it.

In " Perilous" she goes off in the dark to find her missing friend and then get her to medical care. Amber is the only one in her corridor group who manages to ride the Hive from level 1 all the way to level 100, so she is somewhat athletic.Įven though Amber is afraid of heights she is still incredibly brave, especially considering the environment she grew up in. The last traditional act of rebellion for the 18 year olds, on the last night of Carnival, is to ride the hive as far as they can, because the next day the will go into lottery and then for the rest of their lives, be responsible adults. One of the acceptable forms of rebellion for teens is jumping up on the handrails of the down-ways (auto stairways) and riding the railings as far as they can without falling or until a Hasty comes along and tells them to get down. That made her worry more about the Lottery of 2532, when she would be tested and imprinted with all of the knowledge she would need for her career.īut she had moments of rebellion.
She dutifully attended all of the activity sessions, but to her frustration, did not discover any particular talent.
